, also known as Benaras and Kasi or Kashi. It is the traditional art style of Indian saree heritage, that is still very popular. No Indian Wedding is complete without a Banarasi saree. Historically, these sarees are considered to be among the finest. With all the gold and silver color brocade, zari, jacquard and other floral motifs, benarasi sarees used to be the dress of Royal blood. Even the men used the rich banarasi fabric in their styles and turbans. The gold color intricate designs on the body and the pallu create the signature look. These saris are made on various fabrics such as organza, pure silk, dupion silk, tussar silk, net, viscose etc. The gold and silver embroidery work on these sarees make them very heavy.

The designs created on the sarees are very intricate. Depending upon the intricacy of designs and patterns, it may take anywhere from 15 days to a one month and sometimes up to six months to complete a saree. The golden color work in the form of bootis and the zari borders complement the gold jewelry very well. Indian women wear Banarasi saris on important occasions such as when attending a wedding, teej, karva chauth etc. and are expected to be complemented by the woman's best jewelry. The colors of the Benarasi sarees is very rich and the fabric gives the sheen that is most sought by every woman. There are sarees available that have real gold and silver work done on it. These sarees are passed on from one generation to another; the daughters would inherit this beautiful saree from their mothers and pass it on to their daughters later.

It is considered to be an auspicious saree for every North Indian. Adding a Banarasi saree to her collection is a must for every bride from Varanasi. Other features that make the saree look distinctive are Heavy gold work, Compact weaving, figures with small details, metallic visual effects, pallus, jal (a net like pattern), and mina work. The sari making is more of a cottage industry for about 12 lakh people associated directly or indirectly with the handloom silk industry of the region around Varanasi encompassing Gorakhpur, Chanduali, Bhadohi, Jaunpur and Ajamgargh districts.
