Tripods How To Choose The Right One

Choosing the right type of tripod can mean the difference between a pleasant and successful photography experience and a photographic nightmare

. There are lots of different tripods to choose from these days from many manufacturers, so it can be difficult to know exactly which model to get, especially if you are new to photography. This article provides some guidance that could be useful in helping you decide which tripod to get for your photographic needs.

One of the most important aspects to consider is weight. Tripods vary considerably in weight depending on what theyre made from. Which weight is appropriate for you depends on what type of photography you mostly engage in. For example, if you are primarily studio based and do not have to carry your tripod around with you everywhere you go, you can get away with buying a heavy tripod. If, on the other hand, youre a travel photographer or you go out on location a lot, youll probably want a lighter model.

Heavy tripods are the prime choice for studio photographers because the weight adds extra stability. It takes a lot of vibration or wind to shift a heavy tripod so the photographer can be confident that their camera will remain steady when shooting with one. Studio photographers do not need to carry their equipment out on location very often, so they do not need a light weight model.

On the other hand, travel photographers prefer light weight tripods. It certainly makes life difficult carrying around a heavy tripod when climbing a mountain to take panoramic view shots, so travel photographers and those who often go out on location prefer light tripods.

The head of the tripod is important too. Heads are usually one of two types ball heads or three way heads. Both types of heads have their advantages and disadvantages and which one you choose will be a matter of personal choice. A lot of tripods do not come with a head, so you will be free to choose the type you want.

Ball heads are easy to manoeuvre but can slip if the camera is too heavy. Three way heads require a bit more work to move in more than one direction at a time, but they provide a lot of stability. There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to tripod heads you simply choose the one you feel the most comfortable with.

Another thing to evaluate is the tripod legs. Most legs come with some sort of padding, and this can be essential if shooting in cold weather. The legs can get very cold and therefore difficult to grip and adjust, but the padding can help keep the cold at bay. The padding also protects the legs from bumps and scratches. The more protection, the better off you are.

It is also a good idea to check how easy it is to extend the legs. Good tripods will have grips that lock and unlock, allowing for quick adjustments to be made. Some tripods have screw functions, which can be quite stable, so if this is what you prefer then this is what you should buy.

Ultimately, the tripod you choose will have to suit your photography style and purpose.
