Our society has been working under the meritocracy system. It means that you must be someone with merit for the society and its subjects to recognize you. But how do we earn merits? Are the trophies and awards we have received are enough justification of our merits?

Since childhood, different trainings have been taught to us to mold us to become future leaders. For toddlers, there are CD's and DVD's that aims to teach them basics of the alphabet, mathematics, language, colors and communication for daily interaction. Those whom both parents are working everyday at the office, outside their home, must have learned their alphabet through these CD's and DVD's. Aside from that, different television programs like Barney are there to develop us. These are just few of the things some of us have experienced.

Learning does not end in watching Barney teaching you how to count. We continue to learn as we grow old. For some people, competition starts at high school but there are also those who have really been competitive with their classmates and friends as early as the grade school. Here, we are taught to strive for the best. It is not enough for some to pass the course for the sake of passing it and for the sake of graduation. For some, they have to pass the course with flying colors. We wanted to have those medals, trophies and anything that would signify an award given to you because of achieving something. Well, this is not impossible if and only if we are willing enough to strive for the best. The problem is we like partying better than studying. Who would want to study for hours at home when you already studied at your school for the whole day?

But what is the essence of studying and all the learning process that we have to undergo? Is it simply a rite of passage that everyone has to experience? What about people from other culture whose concept of education differs with what we know in United Kingdom?

Some of us wanted those awards and trophies not just for displaying purposes. Having trophies, means something in our society. It implies that the more trophies you have, the more credible you are. And this is true not just in the academic realm of our lives but in every aspect. In fact, it is not the academe that is famous in giving trophies. Sports events like FIFA World Cup is one of the most awaited tournament and coveted trophies in our time. There is a long list of trophy makers in United Kingdom like Discount Trophies. All of them aim to help us find the best trophy accurate for the event, a trophy that would signify something in our lives and say that you are a person with merits.
