Tropical Paradise Discovered In Breathtaking Fuamulaku
Floating in the heart of the Equatorial Channel
, Fuamulaku is the Maldivian solitary isle of resplendence. Separated and secluded from the tourist infested shores of the popular islands and atolls of the nation, this scenic piece of paradise is a haven waiting to be discovered by those in the know of its true value and beauty. Renowned for its succulent locally grown fruit and vegetable produced by the islands inhabitants are some of the healthiest in all of the Maldives. Nourished by the rare fruits and vegetables that are only found on Fuamulaku, the islanders are notably stronger, taller and live longer than most Maldivian islanders due to the rich natural heritage of their residence.
Located in the Gnaviyani atoll, the 4500 metre long 1200 metre wide island is nearly 50km from the capital of Male. Divided in to eight picturesque villages named Dhashokubai, Dhadimago, Miskimmago, Diguvndo., Dndigan, Hdhado, Fundo, Mlegan and Mdhado, the Island of the Areca nut palms as it is locally known also houses a submerged reef, saltwater lagoon and a natural port.
Must-see attraction when touring Fuamulaku includes its vast vegetable and fruit farms which are mainly concentrated in Dhadimago. Visitors can expect to see eggplants, carrots, cucumbers, ladies' fingers, cabbage and tomatoes stretching across the horizon line while capsicum and pepper farms are also a common sight. Fruit such as pineapples, pond-apples and various types of bananas are also cultivated here in addition to vibrant fern and spinach varieties.
Other highlights include visits to the islands many historic sites including the famed Fua Mulaku Havitta where the ancient ruins of a Buddhist stupa are found. Dating back to the pre-Islamic period in the countrys history, the ruins consist of a 40 foot high hill and an adjoining mound of 15 feet. The Vasho-Veyo bath complex is worth the visit as the circular bath is an architectural marvel that encompasses porites coral stone carvings. The ancient stone pool complete with stone steps is testament to local ingenuity and creativity as the hirigal stone cuttings are exquisite even today. The Gemmiskki coral stone mosque is another must-see as it is believed to be the oldest surviving mosque on the island.
Visitors who come during the southwest monsoon season can also witness the flying fish (Hulhammaha) natural phenomenon on the north-western coastline of the island. A colourful local festival of grand proportion, the event involves catching flying fish that are caught in their hundreds by hand in the region between Dhadimago fanno and Thoondu.
