Stress is known to trigger a biochemical process that slows down metabolism in our body. Also when under stress, many people tend to reach for food rich in carbohydrate to ease the stress out. Food rich in carbohydrate increases a brain chemical known as serotonin, which is known to have a calming effect. This might work for time being but in the long run it only adds weight to the body.
Medicines
Intake of medicines is yet another reason why a person gains weight. Most hormone replacement therapy patients gain weight. Intake of estrogen containing oral contraceptives also results in weight gain, as it results in retention of fluid by body, leading to increased appetite. Other drugs that commonly increase body weight are steroids, antidepressants and diabetic medications.
Medical Conditions
There are various medical conditions that can cause weight gain or hinder weight loss. Among them are Chronic stress, Cushing's syndrome, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Hypothyroidism and Syndrome X. Almost all of these disease cause fluid retention, resulting in general puffiness all over the body.
Age
As we grow older we gain weight. Direct reason behind this is that with age our physical abilities decline, that decreases our metabolism rate too. This in turn contributes to increase in weight.
