. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that truck drivers and driver/sales workers make up one of the largest occupations. These occupations held over three million jobs in the year 2008. The number of truck driver jobs is estimated to increase by thirteen percent between the years 2008 and 2018. Most people who look at truck driving jobs with down cast eyes don't look at these jobs with the right attitude. Much of this perception is based on the limited knowledge people have about the truck driving industry and the job itself.
Trucks are not the only way to transport goods but they are definitely the most flexible. Trucks transport food, water, vehicles, homes, and more. Truck drivers are responsible for picking up these goods and transporting the freight from one location to another. Truck drivers also have certain laws to follow and logs to keep. Another responsibility truck drivers have is to check their equipment often and keep it in good working condition.
Truck drivers must go through training and meet other qualifications as well. A required qualification for drivers who operate trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds must have a current commercial driver's license (CDL). Technical and vocational schools offer courses to help prepare for CDL training. Employers usually have training programs for new drivers who have a current CDL. Some states, as well as the companies themselves, require drivers to complete the training course before receiving their CDL.
Qualifications and standards for truck drivers are regulated by the Federal government as well as the State. These qualifications and standards include: the driver must have a current driver's license issued by the state the driver lives in, drivers must be fingerprinted and submit a criminal background check in order to receive the hazardous materials endorsement, to qualify for a CDL a driver must have a clean driving record and pass written tests on rules and regulations, drivers must also demonstrate that they can safely operate commercial trucks. Other Federal qualifications must be met such as drug screenings and periodic drug tests while the driver is on duty.
Truck driving jobs are increasing in demand and many come with many benefits. Recruiters can help place experienced drivers in the right job with the right company. Truck drivers are wanted and will continue to be so as the growing marketplace increases in its variety of products and merchandice.
