Trustfighter: Remove This Rogue
Protecting your PC is important; it is the means of not only entertainment for many people
, it is how they work, how they communicate, how they study. For most, it plays more than one important role. Because we need our computers for a wide variety of reasons, we need to make sure they are protected. It is possible for Trojans to enter our systems, and they may bring with them rogue antivirus programs, such as TrustFighter.
TrustFighter: A Rogue Antivirus Program
TrustFighter is a clone of WiniFighter, TrustSoldier, and SafeFighter, and comes from the same series of rogue programs as WinGuard. Typical of all rogue antivirus programs, TrustFighter will run scans on your system as soon as you start your computer and produce a list of threats it has found. It urges users to purchase the full protection of its licensed version. There are several problems with this, however. First, there is not really a scan. Second, the files it claims to have found with security issues are in fact created by TrustFighter in order to persuade you that your computer is at risk. And third, purchasing the licensed edition will not resolve these problems. It obviously will not remove itself, and it is likely that you have no other risks.
Do You Have TrustFighter in Your System?
It is possible to have TrustFighter in your computer without realizing it. Eventually, you will notice several telltale signs. The most prominent is the presence of pop-up ads and false warning messages. These are designed with one purpose in mind: to persuade users to download their software. To meet this goal, this rogue program generates both false scan results and false warning messages. A typical warning will read:
Spyware Alert!
Your computer is infected with spyware. It could damage your critical files or expose your private data on the internet. Click here to register your copy of TrustFighter and remove spyware threats from your PC.
Many people see the warning and assume it has been issued by their own security program. They simply click OK or opt to download TrustFighter. This is certainly a common mistake; in fact, that is why rogue programs are so effective. They appeal to peoples need to protect their PCs. Whenever you see a warning like this, make sure that you close it using the task manager. Do not click on any component of the ad as this may cause it to launch itself.
The false scan result window is also designed to look identical to a legitimate warning. TrustFighters name appears in the top right corner, with Help Protect Your PC written underneath. There are various options on the task toolbar, including scan and quarantine. You can choose to scan specific files remember, though, this program is not really scanning your computer. It is finding the harmless, random files it has installed itself. Of course, the only solution to your problem is to buy the full software, or so the ad claims. It is important to never download a program like this. When looking at scan results, make sure you have actually opened your security program and run a scan. If you have not, use your task manager to close the ad.
This is the first noticeable sign, but equally irritating is the slowdown you will see in your computers performance. This program buries itself in your registry and launches itself each time your computer is turned on. It remains running constantly in the background. Simple jobs, like opening a document or switching between browser windows, take much longer than normal.
Rogue programs can also hijack your browser settings. Instead of being greeted by your homepage, you may find that you are directed to a site featuring TrustFighter, urging you to protect your computer with their software. Remember not to click on any part of the page. This program can also install desktop shortcuts.
There are all reliable signs that you have a rogue antivirus program in your system. But how did it get there?
How TrustFighter Becomes Installed in Your System
There are two different ways TrustFighter can become installed in your system. The first is that the user installed it intentionally. If you have never had a rogue program on your computer, you may wonder how someone could possibly want to download it intentionally. That is a good question, and the answer is that nobody wants to download a rogue program. They want to download a reliable security program that will remove risks from their system. Unfortunately, many rogue programs are adept at creating the appearance of legitimacy and persuade users to download their protection.
It is important to reiterate that you do not get anything in return for your money. You will not see any protection from viruses, and you will not even see a reduction in the pop-ups caused by TrustFighter itself.
While that does happen, it is more common for this program to become installed without the computer owners consent. They often do not realize anything is amiss until they notice the telltale signs. TrustFighter comes in on a Trojan. These are just like the Trojan Horse that the Greeks used to invade Troy. TrustFighter hides inside the Trojan and gains entrance in that way. The Trojan associated with this particular program disguises itself as an update for Adobe Flash. Because Adobe Flash is a legitimate program that many have on their computers, it is easy to just hit OK and invite the Trojan in.
It is also common for TrustFighter to come in on Trojans that disguise themselves as video codec, such as Zlob, Media-Codec, Goldcodec, and Briancodec, that can lurk in sites offering free videos.
To protect yourself from encountering such Trojans, be careful about downloading free or shareware. If you receive pop-ups advising you of security risks, make sure they do, in fact, come from your own security program. If you suspect that your computer does have a program like TrustFighter installed in its registry, take steps to remove it immediately.
