Truth Vs. Propaganda
The 1930s were an unsettled time not unlike recent times and citizens have to be very watchful for propaganda. It's a difficult job but every voter has to decide which statements are true, craftily misleading, total exaggeration, or even false. It's hard because a lot of claims and negative ads have been composed by specialist consultants, ad agencies, and democracy groups whose job it is to slant things.
The fact is we have smart people in our government who are trying to solve problems, or could solve them, if they were able to have truth-filled debates among one another and then come to agreement on the top goals.
But it does not seem like our Congress is able to size up problems, set common sense goals, and create legislation that most could agree upon.
No one wants a coal miner to lose his job or for a Detroit worker to find less and less work.
But we can't pull out of the unemployment and housing trough while political leadership is able to compose propaganda which derides every step in the right direction and every attempt at evidence-based problem solving and discourse.
Converting America to new forms of day-to-day earn-a-living and save the planet requires a huge mobilization and leadership. We're not going to be able to do this while misleading political leadership and its influence food chains control reason.
We are not having a debate about how to govern America; we're in a civil war between evidence-based problem solving and what are worrisome levels of self-serving and corrupted power and speech. There is a kind of parallel.
The business leaders in Germany who supported Adolf Hitler in 1933 were not able to envision the consequences of a warped reality that would lead to the destruction of Europe. The Germans, it must be noted, were motivated by a deadly fear of the spread of communism and so they rearmed and went to war with Russia. They attempted to move their border eastward to the other side of Poland to create a buffer. They mobilized the German population by building a great propaganda machine, commandeering the legislature, removing civil rights, and by assuming total control of the police and army. Adolf Hitler and the German government argued for each of these necessities along the way with evangelical purity.
The Russian Revolution and the threat of communism were huge drivers which changed German government and citizen thinking and behavior which lead to a terrible outcome. It was a very unsettled time.
There are many fears and things are unsettled in the USA right now. But how can we pull out of this one if we can't break free from a decade of certified failed Republican policy and its powerful influences? That's eight years of Bush-Cheney and two recent years of McConnell-Boehner obstruction.
So sort through the propaganda and decide if you want legislators who can lead us in the right direction vs. back into the ditch.
