Try a Pedestal Sink as a Striking Design Statement

Try a Pedestal Sink as a Striking Design Statement

A bathroom sink isn't just a place where you wash hands, spit out your toothpaste or empty your electric razor. It's a potential design statement. And a pedestal sink is a striking way to make that statement.

Dating back to the early 1900s with its pillar and column design, these sinks still resonate as something straight out of a royal palace or a Greek theater. These are typically single-leg fixtures and can truly revitalize any outdated bathroom. And with an eye for design and a small amount of research, you could soon be enjoying one in your own bathroom.

Pedestal sinks were originally constructed from enameled cast iron (just like the stuff cast iron skillets are made from). By 1915, manufacturers began making them from vitreous china, a heavy and somewhat fragile glass-like porcelain. For the most part, they're still made that way today, and bring a sense of elegance and history along with them.

A sink is a sink, and pedestal sinks are no different. Sink shape can vary from octagon to rectangle to U-shaped. Specialty, oval and round sinks are also available. In addition, sinks are configured with one, two, three and four holes, and are even offered without holes.

While most pedestal sink basins are made from vitreous china, while some are constructed from fireclay, glass, marble and ceramic.

Because of their relatively small size, pedestal sinks are ideal for smaller or half-bathrooms. A pedestal sink is just a basin until the basin has something under it. Pedestals stands must sometimes be purchased separately and are available in a number of themes, including classic, modern, Renaissance, retro, traditional and Victorian.

Stands also come in a wide range of materials. Vitreous china is the most popular, as well as fireclay and stainless steel. Other materials include ceramic, marble, stone, tempered glass and wood. Colors vary, as well, including the popular white, neutral and grey.

When you're ready to rejuvenate your bathroom or add a touch of class to a bathroom of any size, consider a pedestal sink.

Until next time, Happy Home Improving!
