Tsavo East National park

An Africa vacation cannot be complete without the visit of some of the largest National parks in east Africa region. An example is Tsavo National Park, which lies halfway between Mombasa and Nairobi, was gazetted in 1948 by the colonial government with the chief aim of conserving wildlife and thereby evicting the hunters and gathers who inhibited the region (mainly Walianguru a sub-tribe of Wataita and the Kamba communities). The park is bisected by the main Nairobi Mombasa road and railway. This is designated as the Tsavo road and railway national reserve occupying 50km each. The portion lying north and east of the road is designated Tsavo East National Park and that to the south as Tsavo West national Park for administration purposes. The Tsavo national Park is Kenya's largest wildlife stronghold covering a vast arid region of 20,807 km2 almost 3.5% of Kenya.

Tsavo east National Park alone covers an area of 11,655 km with a vast ecosystem and watered by two permanent rivers, the Tsavo river with its source form Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mzima Spring. River Athi sourcing from Ngong forest meadows through the park and the two unite above lugard falls to become Galana River. The Voi and Punda Milia River and other numerous streams are seasonal and drain to the Galana at some point. These are the sources of water for wildlife and the community with supplements from boreholes and man-made Aruba dam that is within the park boundaries.

Only a third (1/3) of Tsavo East has been developed and made accessible for visitation with the rest, mainly the scrub desert north of Galana River left furrow on the accounts of the difficult waterless nature of the terrain and partly due to insecurity heightened by poaching.

The average annual rainfall in the area varies from 200 to 700 mm per annum and these amounts are approximately equally distributed over the two rainy seasons. At times the region goes for more than two years without reasonable rainfall. Potential evapotranspiration is high, more than 200mm per annum. Temperatures are fairly constant over the year, with the mean monthly maxim being around 30c and the monthly maxim around 20c.

Tsavo East National Park as with all other National Parks is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service.
