Have you ever been taking a shower and realize you're up to your ankles in water. You check the drain to make sure the wash cloth hasn't covered the drain or the plunger isn't down, but no, it's perfectly fine and clear of all obstacles. What could it be?

Tubs can get clogged up with hair, soap scum, and grease. Some steps to take on a clogged drain would be to fill the tub about halfway with water, and plunge the drain with a plunger. This will do the same thing the plunger does to your toilet. It may shoot pressure through the pipe to loosen the clog and the water will push it out.

Homeowners have been lead to believe that chemicals can do the job. In some cases they work for clogs such as grease and soap scum, but overall the chemicals are harmful to people and the environment. That's why the pros don't use them.

If the drain has a serious problem, it may be time to call a professional. Check in your area for plumber's who will give free estimates and take advantage of that to get the cheapest price. The plumber will have a machine he will stick in the drain that will rip right through the mess that's clogging your line.

There are some things you can do to prevent your tub drain from becoming a problem:

Use strainers in all your drains to stop hair from going down the drain. It's easier to clear out a strainer once a month than unblock a drain every six.

Don't just drop small pieces of soap down the drain assuming they will dissolve and wash away. That's how soap builds up in a drain.

Once a month, pour a kettle full of boiling water down the drain. This will melt any grease (body oil) and wash it away before it can build up. Don't do this in a toilet; the boiling water could crack the porcelain).

Every three months or so, pour a half cup of baking soda in the drain then slowly add a half cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit in the drain for a few minutes and then rinse it away by running lots of hot water down the drain. This will not only keep your drains free running, but clean smelling as well.
