Thousands of people in southern California have reaped the benefits of laparoscopic gastric band surgery. With this procedure, a surgeon installs a Lap Band or REALIZE Band around the top of the stomach, causing the patient to feel full after eating a small amount of food. After several months of eating less and gradually becoming more active, the patient will experience dramatic weight loss.

However, not everyone who loses a significant amount of weight is immediately eager to wear a revealing bathing suit to the beach. This is because of loose excess skin which, for some bariatric patients, can appear around the abdomen after such rapid weight loss. A tummy tuck procedure can eliminate the extra skin, create a smooth midsection and complete the desired transformation.

The tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is performed under local or general anesthesia and usually takes between two to five hours. The surgeon will begin by making and incision along the bikini line. The navel will then be cut away so that it can be placed back in the proper position once the skin has been stretched. The surgeon will then lift the flap of abdominal skin and tighten the muscle underneath. After redefining the abdominal wall, the surgeon will stretch the skin flap back down and cut away any excess tissue. Sometimes temporary drains will be inserted to remove excess fluid.

A similar surgery is called the Fleur-de-Li procedure. With this method, the surgeon removes the section of skin on the front as well as the sides of the abdomen. The skin is then pulled tight, top to bottom and side to side. This technique is used to give the torso a more tapered appearance.

A tummy tuck patient will remain at the hospital anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Some discomfort and pain is expected shortly after the surgery, but can be controlled with medication. To aid recovery, the patient should begin walking as soon as possible. When the patient is comfortable enough, he or she should begin exercising to strengthen the abdominal muscles. Scaring will be visible for nine months to a year, but should fade away considerably after that.
