Tummy Tuck: Know About The Recovery Process

Abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck

, is a procedure wherein the excess fat, skin and tissues of the patient is trimmed or taken out to achieve a leaner and trimmer appearance. There are two kinds of surgeries under abdominoplasty, the complete and partial operations. The duration of the procedure can range from a little under two hours and run up to five hours. Incisions are made for both kinds of tummy tuck surgeries but the partial one has a smaller one compared to the complete one.

Post Operative Care

Recovery period for both forms of abdominoplasty operations is dependent on which kind of surgery the patient has undergone. It is understandable that the complete method will have a slightly longer recovery duration compared to the partial one since the incisions differ in size. The surgeon will prescribe medicines to help with the various after effects of the procedure. It is important to follow the doctor's instructions to reduce the risk of complications.

Immediately after the tummy tuck, the patient is required to stay overnight in the hospital to contend any complications after a major surgery. During this time, medication is given to the patient to address the swelling and discomfort right after the operation. The patient may be drowsy or out of sorts due to the anesthesia given during the procedure. A drain is usually placed in the incision for several days to put out excess fluids. It is important to rest and move as little as possible during the first 24 hours, until the doctor says it is okay to do so.

The patient should expect to have about a two week period where he or she will rest and do very little daily activities. A compression garment should be worn to facilitate better healing and less movement in the area. Light to moderate movement is encouraged for better recovery, such as walking and light daily activities.

Strenuous activities are discouraged since these may open up the wounds and complicate the procedure. Sometimes, swelling in the feet may need to be addressed with wearing compression stockings to prevent blood pooling in the legs. After about a week from the tummy tuck operation, the stitches will be removed. Bandages and dressings need to be changed regularly so instructions will be prescribed by the surgeon.

After the token two week period, the patient is still advised against strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, running and many others where one exerts too much effort. The doctor will need to check the wound if it is healing properly and will address concerns of the patient about this. It may take about a four month period after the tummy tuck surgery before normal activities can be taken up.
