Tungnath is the highest temple in the world and is one of the five and the highest Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in the Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand, India

Tungnath (12,073) is the third of the Panch Kedar--five Himalayan temples identified with Shiva, of which Kedarnath is the most important. The temple is believed to be 1000 years old and is the second in the pecking order of the Panch Kedars. All five can still be reached only on foot, and all of these temples are high enough that they close in the winter, when they are snowbound.

The footpath to Tungnath begins at the little town of Chopta, and is a steep walk, climbing over 3000 feet in only 2.5 miles. This photo shows the gateway at the beginning of the path, with the Tungnath name painted on the crest of the archseemingly promising that it is close by. As at Kedarnath, one can hire a horse to ride up to the temple.

The priest at this temple is a local Brahmin from Maku village, unlike the other Kedar temples where the priests are from South India, a tradition set by the 8th century Hindu guru Sankaracharya. It is also said that the Khasi Brahmins officiate as priests at this temple. During the winter season, the temple is closed and the symbolic image of the deity and the temple priests are moved to Mukkumath, which is 19 km from here. It is near Duggalbitha (10 km ) before Chopta towards Ukhimath.

Other than being a religious destination, it is also a well known trekking destination.

How to Reach Tungnath

The trek starts from Chopta, the nearest road head on the NH 58 from Rudraprayag via Shivpuri, Devprayag,Rishikesh, Haridwar and Srinagar. all the Panch Kedar trek routes, the route to Tungnath is the shortest: only4 km (2.5 mi) from Chopta (on the Ukimath Gopeshwar road) that can be covered in approximately 34 hours

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun (258 km ). The nearest railway station is in Rishikesh (241 km ).
