Tunisian Commission Quits

A commission that had been working on re-writing freedom of press laws in Tunisia has recently quit

. They explained that the government has shown little help in changing the laws that currently restrict media within their country. The National Authority to Reform Information and Communication was formed in March 2011 after their dictators laws were overturned, but the commission still met with roadblocks, despite the fact that their dictator had been deposed.

This is a major obstacle when it comes to freedom of expression. In the U.S., people take these freedoms for granted, but the people of the U.S. need to remember that this is not a privilege that everyone gets to have. Freedom of press is an essential part of democracy, our founding fathers believed, and many other nations have adopted this frame of thinking when re-making their own laws.

The Islamist government within Tunisia has been criticized for not being too concerned with forming democracy, however. There are also two other secular parties that help run the government. but members of the opposition have launched a criticism attack saying that their country is being mismanaged.

The commission is a good piece of evidence for these critics. The commission proposed their new set of laws in November, and they have allegedly been met with no recognition from the Tunisian government. Instead, the new government has merely been appointing the heads of media outlets; this has been done in a manner very similar to what the old government was doing. As you can see, there is great reason for proponents of freedom of the press to be angry over this. If the government is just going to continue to control the Tunisian media, there was little point of appointing the commission in the first placeother than for show, it seems.

Freedom of the press is one of the basic tenets of independent life within the U.S. Its something that our founding fathers prided themselves upon giving to future generations and although not every country in the world has adopted this measure of freedom, it has been an inspiration to most people in the world seeking freedom for themselves and their friends and family. No one can really be free if they are not being fed true information, and freedom of the press encourages this.

Whats more is that a free press often is what points out major problems in government. Think of former U.S. President Richard Nixon and the exposing of the Watergate scandal. The free press was able to bring that to the worlds attention and he eventually was forced to resign from office as a result. Freedom of the press keeps people in business more trustworthy and honest, too. The more uncovering that a free press can do of social and political inequities, the better off the people will be since the problems are more directly brought to their attention and can be rectified in a more appropriate manner. A free press is more than just a part of our Bill of Rights, then, its a way to make sure we stay free. The Tunisian people deserve this, too.
