You've finally got that beautiful lawn you have been dreaming of, it looks fantastic and all the neighbours are jealous. What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing you believe, until the lovable family pet is allowed to regain its territory and mysterious yellow patches begin to appear all over your newly laid lawn. And there it is, the all-too-familiar dilemma known by many as the "female dog spot disease".

As is commonly known among keen gardeners and many professionals in the trade, family pets going about their daily business can be highly detrimental to the health of your lawn. Females are known to be the worst offenders as they are usually less interested in marking their territory and more likely to squat in any location relieving themselves all at once. Their male counterparts however will choose to target multiple locations releasing smaller amounts of the harmful nitrogen based product per go and therefore resulting in lower levels of concentration and less of a threat to your lawn.

What can be done?

A simple internet search brings up a variety of solutions to the irritating obstacle faced by those pet lovers striving for a beautiful lawn without upsetting the dog. Some suggest the best course of action is to adapt your dog to its surroundings. Rumour has it that feeding your pet tomato juice or adding garlic and salt to their diet can help to dilute its urine, and reduce its harmful effects. This may however come at a price to the health of your pet, which is obviously far from ideal. Another approach is to train your canine to urinate in designated areas only. Although it may be easier to train younger animals, this should be achievable for dogs of all ages but may involve constantly monitoring the habits of your pet for any number of months and guiding them to the designated pee-area' each time they need to go.

Alternatively, you may wish to dilute your dog's urine post production by watering the area after the event has occurred. This is however only believed to have positive effects when carried out within a certain time period. If you don't manage to reach the spot armed with your watering can before 8 hours have passed, your efforts may not be rewarded. For the more stubborn patches, there are a range of pet friendly' products designed to repair problem areas, though sometimes the only answer may be to re-seed or replace and hope that the culprit doesn't re-offend.

It seems that if you have the determination and perseverance required, you can beat the troublesome effects your pet has on the health of your lawn and the two can live in harmony.
