Turkey Hunting Gets the Oprah Magazine Bump!

If you catch yourself sitting around the house this upcoming holiday with nothing to do why not grab a copy of your ladies Oprah Magazine. OK this might not sound like a good idea but look for the December edition because they have an article supporting turkey hunting. The article goes into detail about the authors, Kimberly Hiss turkey hunt in Nebraska. Hiss also writes about why she started to hunt and why she continues to hunt. For Hiss hunting is not just merely an enjoyable activity but it also makes brings her closer to her food source. She used virtually every part of the turkeys she kills and even donates the feathers.

It is great to see a women's magazine take an interest in hunting. The past decade has seen a huge increase in the number of female hunters and this article shows that not all women are opposed to hunting. Hunting can be an enjoyable activity for everyone in your family. I personally like the article because I feel that it will help to draw new females into hunters. With the hunting population slowly and slowly getting older and declining a new source of hunters is needed and I think that more women hunters are a great way to keep the tradition of hunting alive.

I just wonder why it took such a long time for a main stream magazine to pick up an article on hunting. Why did the article focus on turkey hunting and not another type of hunting like deer? Deer hunting is one of the most popular forms of hunting in the United States and I would have liked to see the article be on a female deer hunter. For some reason I seem to think that the article wasn't on deer hunting because of the entire "Bambi" stigmata due in a large part to the famous Disney movie by the same title.

This article doesn't only show that women can enjoy hunting but that they can start at any age. Hiss did not get into hunting until later in her life which should help to show that you can still enjoy hunting even if you were not from a family that hunts. One thing that the article didn't mention which I would have liked to see was that it doesn't provide any resources for women hunters. If you don't come from a family that hunts and you still have an interest in hunting, this article would leave you curious but not give you any direction on how to go about getting started hunting. Hunt and Shoot offers a great resource for finding hunter training courses offered by states and also some general information on how to get started.
