Modern day hair transplantation surgery has basically two main methods or techniques

. One is called strip extraction, in which a strip of skin is removed from the back of the scalp depending on the availability of donor area and density of hair follicles. The strip, on an average is about 10-20cm in length and 1-1.5cm in width. After the removal of donor strip, the wound is closed by sutures, usually absorbable sutures or stitches are used so that there is no need for stitch removal and it gets absorbed by the body within 3-5 weeks. The strip of skin thus harvested is divided into thin, fine slices without damaging hair follicles under stereoscopic microscope by a team of highly trained technicians and each hair follicle unit is separated and properly preserved in cold temperature until it is transplanted into the recipient area. The other technique of Hair Transplantation is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), in which hair can be transplanted to the bald area from other parts of the body such as scalp, beard, chest and other body hair, even pubic hair can be transplanted if desired or needed. This method doesnt involve strip harvesting from back of the scalp. Special micro punchers or drills are used to extract hair each hair follicle, but this method is time consuming and more expensive than strip extraction method.

During this procedure of donor strip harvesting or follicular unit extraction, complete sterility is ensured. Recipient sites are created on the bald areas by microblades or needles. Whatever method of hair transplantation is used, the implantation of hair follicles basically remains same, says expert at Oliva Hair transplant & Cosmetic surgery Center

Each hair follicle is carefully implanted in these sites by a highly trained team of professionals. On an average, 1500-2500 can be implanted in a normal days session, which takes about 5-8 hours. During the procedure, the client is wide awake and can enjoy watching television as only the scalp is anaesthetized. The patient can go home immediately after the procedure is completed and can resume normal work from 2nd day onwards.

Generally, there is no pain after the procedure; although mild pain, swelling or discomfort can be controlled by regular analgesics and supportive medications.

The head can be washed normally after 2-3 days. The transplanted hair is firmly taken up by the scalp skin within 48 hours. New hair growth can be seen from 2-3 months onwards and decent coverage of the recipient area can by seen after 6-10 months. The hair thus transplanted can be trimmed, shaved, washed, and colored as they are our natural hair.
