Turn Indexing Off For An Instant Xp Performance Boost
Do you possess an XP computer that is running at a snail's pace
? How about that Windows Indexing Service? Is it enabled and running? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then you may want to turn indexing off for an instant performance increase. The Windows Indexing Service, in case you're wondering, is responsible for indexing the properties and even contents of files on your hard disk drive, as well as any shared drives on your network, whether it be wired or wireless. It facilitates swift access to files on local and remote machines. To simplify those terms, imagine being able to track every file in your filing cabinet and pull it up exactly when you need it. As you can imagine, the service can be convenient, but in return, it's very intensive. The service, which was designed to run nonstop, can actually significantly hurt your PC's performance.
Now, if you hardly ever use this service or do not always utilize file searching, then you can safely disable feature and just turn it on when you need it. Once you do, you will definitely notice an improvement in your computer's performance as you'll have more RAM available for your programs and files, and your CPU will have horespower for more important tasks.
Here's how you can disable the Indexing Service on a per-drive basis:
1.Click on Start
2.Go to My Computer and click on it
Note: If you have a My Computer shortcut on your Desktop, you can simply click on it there
3.Choose the drive you don't want to index and right-click on it
4.Click on Properties
5.Uncheck the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" box at the bottom of the General tab
6.Point your mouse cursor to Apply and click on it
7.Click the OK button
Important Note: The content of the drive you chose will then be eliminated from memory. The elimination process may take a few minutes to finish.
Here's what you need to do to disable the Windows Indexing Service:
1.Point your mouse cursor to Start and click on it, then select Run
2.In the Run box, type in services.msc
3.Then, click OK
4.In the Services window, scroll down and look for the Indexing Service then double-click on it
5.If it is in the Running state, click on the Stop button
6.Next, disable it by selecting "Disabled" in the startup type drop down menu list
7.Click Apply
8.Then click OK
9.Click File, then Exit in the Services window to close it out.
One can still use Windows search even if they did turn indexing off. However, the search will be slower than when the service is enabled. The cool thing is that you can always re-enable this service if you need it again.
Just use these simple steps to turn it back on:
1.Click on Start
2.Point your mouse cursor to My Computer and click on it
3.Select the drive you'd like to begin indexing again and right-click on it
4.Click on Properties
5.At the bottom of the General tab, check the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching"
6.Click the Apply button
7.Then, click OK.
To re-enable the Indexing Service, just do as follows:
1.Click on Start --> Run
2.Type in services.msc
3.Click the OK button
4.Scroll down and look for the Indexing Service and double-click on it
5.In the Startup type drop down menu list, select either the Automatic or Manual option
6.Click Apply
7.Click on the Start button
8.Then click OK
9.Close the Services window.
