Turn the Mobile Web to a Mass Product

Turn the Mobile Web to a Mass Product

Turn the Mobile Web to a Mass Product

Mobile Internet is here, no doubts. What about mobile-web?

In early 2000 the entire industry praised the WAP standard, claiming it will create a mobile-web revolution, however this revolution failed to come. There are many reasons for the WAP's failure, but the bottom line is that WAP websites managed to provide only poor surfing experience to users that were used to a much richer desktop browsing experience.

Only in mid 2007 the anticipated mobile Internet revolution truly began, with the introduction of the iPhone; finally, surfing the Internet from your Smartphone is fun, and in some cases, it is even better than surfing the web from your own PC.

A revolution or only one step towards one?

The ability of the mobile safari to render any webpage, even ones that were made for desktop screen, removed the main barrier between the Mobile-Web and the World-Wide-Web ("Desktop Web"). However, even this advanced technology provides only limited surfing experience. According to a recent research of Zuznow,80% of the top 12,000 websites worldwide don't provide Smartphone optimized website. This means, that although the mobile share of web traffic went up in 250% in 2010, it still remains less than 5% of the overall web traffic.

From anearly adopters - to a mass product

It goes without saying that as soon as more and more businesses provide Smartphone optimized websites, access and use of mobile-web will increase drastically. However, it is possible to meaningfuly increase the share of todays mobile-web traffic, even prior to such a revolutionary act, by smartly rsponding to two basic barriers:

Allow iPhone users to set Google as their safari homepage

For most surfers Google=Browser=Internet. However since iPhone users can't set Google as their home page, many users are denied de facto from Internet access.

As soon as iPhoner users will be able to set Google as their safari homepage, mobile-web surfing will become much more intuitive for many users and tremendously increasemobile-web traffic share.

Make mobile browsers immune to varying service of 3G networks

While the throughput of 3G network increased in recent years, the service quality is still instable, and mobile browsers fail to detect and handle this situation. Developing an Internet-strength-indicator, can easily provide a suitable solution. The basic concept of an Internet indicator is similar to the WiFi - and cellular signalstrength indicators, and is therefore quite easy for implementation. Its added value, however, will be in providing an estimation of thequality of the Internet connection. This will enable any user to detect and handle problems easily and continue surfing the web.

We are all still waiting for the revolution to arouse, but we can't ignore the fact that the mobile-web trend is awaking. Many websites still fail to respond properly to this trend, but it is only a matter of time that the above mentioned 80%-20% ratio, will turn over. At the moment websites discover the (financial) potential of Smartphone surfers, and develop a comprehensive mobile-web strategy, the mobile-web surfing will reach new levels. In the meantime, and until websites regain composure, I believe that implementing these two - easy and short-term solutions - can initiate wonders. After all, there is nothing wrong with an English revolution, is it?
