Columbus-Despite allowing two return touchdowns, Ohio State was able to take advantage of some unforced errors by the Miami Hurricanes to win 36-24. Miami QB Harris threw 4 interceptions that either stalled drives deep in Ohio State territory or provided Ohio State with tremendous field position. Two were Harriss fault and two were #4 WR Travis Benjamins.

After watching the game, I was impressed with the ability of the Miami Hurricanes on the line of scrimmage. Ohio States offensive line considered by this author to be tied for tops in the Big Ten, found it difficult to open up holes for the running backs. The front four did a nice job of eating up blocks which allowed the second and third tears of the Miami defense to show off its speed. On first down, Ohio State struggled in running the ball which is not the norm for the Buckeyes. QB Terrelle Pryor was a big difference as he was able to make up for the mistakes of the offensive line by making some key plays when needed. Although he did not have a statistically great game throwing the ball, 12-27, 233 yards, he did run for 113 creative yards. More importantly, he did not throw one interception as compared to Harris.

When Miami had the ball, if they werent throwing picks, they were driving. Miami only punted 2 times, a product of the returns, the picks, and their ability to move the ball. I was surprised to see Miami actually establish a running game in the second half something that was missing in the first. Harris hit wide open receivers for most of the second half and it seemed that Miami was driving the whole game but they only scored one offensive touchdown. As usual, the well coached, good tackling, Ohio State Buckeyes didnt beat themselves (no turnovers) and were able to prevail in a game that would have been very close without the turnovers.

Key Points:

Ohio State: The lack of a consistent running game on first down was a concern. The offense wasnt pretty but made plays when needed against an aggressive defense that is faster than any they will see in the Big Ten this year. I didnt say better, Iowa fans. On defense, once again I was not overly impressed with the pass rush though #54 had a great game. The secondary tackled very well but the coverage was a little soft against some speedy Miami receivers.

Miami: Keeping your focus on the road in Columbus is not easy. Miami proved that today. Besides the picks, there were many mental lapses consistent with a team that wasnt as focused as the opposition. HOWEVER, PLEASE BE AWARE, MIAMI IS VERY GOOD. Seeing the Hurricanes play well on both lines of scrimmage tells me that they have the capability of playing with anyone and I would make them the favorite in the ACC if I covered it.
