Turtle to Turbo Speed: Free Your Feet

Last month, I left you on the edge about whether or not I'd actually get aflu shot. Well, I'm happy to report that, along with my other co-workers, I stuck out my arm and did the deed. Wishing a vaccine existed for thecommon cold now, because that's what I'm dealing with today.

This past month, I've also been experimenting with Vibram FiveFingers, or "rubber running slippers," as some have called them. My interest in these unconventional running shoes came from reading "Born to Run" byChristopher McDougell. Years before, I'd been encouraged to run barefoot byDr. Phil Maffetone, an applied kinesiologist who treated and trained some of the world's top Ironman triathletes. Running barefoot in Colorado had no appeal at the time. First, it's cold here, and second, they don't call it the Rocky Mountains for nothing! Yet, when I read about this new shoe that mimics running barefoot, I knew I'd have to give them a try.

The premise behindrunning barefoot is that you land on the middle and front of your foot, thus avoiding the high impact that comes with repetitive heel strikes. The shoe industry has taken the opposite route away from minimalist footwear by providing more and more shoe cushioning. Logic would tell you that with more cushioning, runners would have fewer injuries, but the research comes up short in that regard. In fact, while shoe manufacturers spent years adding more cushioning to shoes, injuries did not go down, but stayed the same.

Barefoot Running Stranger Things Happen

If you are dealing with common running injuries like knee pain, plantar fasciitis orsymptoms of Achilles tendonitis, then you may want to consider the latest running craze of running barefoot. One caveat does exist with all this "less is more" theory. A transition period to barefoot running or running in FiveFingers is absolutely necessary! Learn from my experience. I bought the shoes and received a stern warning to "take it easy." However, when I put them on, my whole running life changed. As soon as I headed out on my first run, my workouts were never the same. The following is what I experienced:

Wasn't able to wipe the silly smile off my face I often break into singing when I'm running in them

I often forget how far I've run Losing count of laps is a common problem when running in FiveFingers

Never worry about twisting an ankle I have one weak ankle that comes from two previous ligament tears (don't ask). With FiveFingers, I feel much more grounded while running

I jump, climb things and basically act like a kid I witnessed a young man in FiveFingers start jumping onto the 11 windowsills that stood 3 feet off the ground, all while running around the track

Avoiding One Injury Only to Have Another

Remember that transition period I spoke about. Well, I was having so much fun that I ran 2 miles in them the first night. Felt so good, I ran another 6.2 the next morning and several more times that week. Then I ran 10 miles in them that following Sunday. Within two weeks, I had a lot of pain on the top of my foot. After three days being sidelined, the problem straightened out. I'm now back doing a more proper transition. Would love to run the marathon in those shoes, but I'll just have to wait and see if that's going to work.

Only three months out from marathon day now. Training at 50 years of age sure is different than 38. I seem to have monthly injuries that require a quick search through the free iTriage app. Don't have it? Get it at the app stores.
