Tuxedo Accessory Style Guide
Tuxedo fashion may seem complicated and daunting for the average man
, but by understanding a few tux fashion tips, you can learn to wear one confidently. With the increasing popularity of business casual apparel, men's formalwear fashion is becoming a dying art.
However, if you are planning to attend a special event such as an opera, ballet, theater show, gala, or formal wedding, it is imperative that you dress the part to look your best. This means wearing a tuxedo. Although most high end designer options such Ralph Lauren tuxes or Calvin Klein tuxedos are relatively conservative, there are a few ways you can accessorize your look to fit your individual style and add some extra pizazz to your look.
Whether you select an Armani tux, Ralph Lauren tux, or Calvin Klein tux, all formal tuxedos includes a jacket, white shirt, vest, cummerbund, and trousers. The actual combination and specific styles of each component can vary upon the time and formality of your event and there are very strict guidelines as to what is appropriate for each occasion. In addition to these staples, there are also a few accessories that go with a tuxedo. These tux accessories are generally where you have the most room for self-expression and individual style.
Bow Tie: A black bow tie is the standard for formal tuxedo wear. If you are renting or purchasing a wedding tux, it is recommended that you wear a plain black tie. Bow ties are available in colors and patterns, but these are best left for costume wear or unique events. A standard straight black tie can be substituted in more contemporary settings, but should be worn with discretion.
Dress Shirt: Generally, only a white shirt should be worn with a tuxedo. A French-cuff dress shirt is the most formal option, but a nice white standard dress shirt will also do if it is in good condition and pressed well. Colored shirts are rarely, if ever appropriate. If you are feeling extremely dapper, a black shirt can be substituted for contemporary events, but should be of the finest quality and color. Black shirts are not a fashion meant for everyone, and should never be worn to a wedding.
Cuff Links: The easiest way to add your own unique touch to a tux is with a nice pair of cuff links. Simple silver cufflinks are the standard and come in many styles including a knot, bar, or diamond shape and may sometimes be encrusted with diamonds or other rare stones. If you are renting or purchasing a wedding tux, it is a great time to invest in a high quality pair of cuff links. A premium set of cuff links also makes a great groomsmen or best man gift and can become a family heirloom. Themed gimmicky cuff links are also available in unique shapes and patterns such as footballs, skulls, or symbols, but should be left at home for formal occasion and never worn with a formal wedding tux.
Shirt Studs: Shirt studs are sometimes worn in place of buttons on a formal dress shirt. Guidelines regarding shirt studs follow the same rules as cuff links. Tasteful silver shirt studs are usually the best option for tuxes.
Handkerchief: A small handkerchief should be worn in the breast pocket and can be made in a variety of colors. In general, a plain white handkerchief is always fashionable, but it is acceptable to venture out into other basic colors. Some men may opt to match the color of their date's dress or for added romance points, could choose a hue to complement their date's eye color.
Dress Shoes: Black patent leather shoes are the standard for a tuxedo or wedding tux. However, if you have a high quality pair of comfortable leather shoes that are well polished, it is okay to wear those instead. Your feet may thank you the next day.
Hats: If you are determined to wear a hat with your tux, opt for a well-made black fedora. Never wear a top hat if you want to be taken seriously, since people will most likely mistake you for the monopoly man.
The best accessories of all for a tuxedo or wedding tux are confidence and good etiquette. Special events are just that, they are formal occasions meant to celebrate or enjoy something extraordinary. Others will notice that you took the extra effort to look and act your best, and will be impressed.
By finding the perfect tux for you and adding classic unique accessories, you will feel more confident, comfortable, and attractive for every special occasion.
