You may believe that things are rapidly changing on SA roads but attending a few AARTO seminars is a cake walk compared to what other areas around the world deal with. Some of the craziest rules (or lack thereof) you could ever imagine, and we're not just talking about the third world here. These points constitute a walk in automotive shame for the developed nations of the world which will make you want to treat AARTO like an old drinking buddy.

China

According to NBC news researcher Warren Pettine, a person dies due to road traffic injuries every five minutes! The government lays the blame on the people, citing poor driving', but that's simply a result of the real problem, which is likely the level of corruption in their traffic departments since most people allegedly secure their licences through bribery. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "traffic injuries account for 25 percent of injury-related deaths in China, surpassed only by suicide at 28 percent".

India

It would appear that the concept of lanes' is more along the way of a guideline; rather than an actual rule. The basic idea here is to get from A to B in as short amount of time as possible and it's important to note that this does not necessarily mean the lowest amount of fatalities possible. Pedestrian crossings, like lanes, are more of a guideline and in India they mean that you should give right of way when you can not move due to a jam up anyway.

USA

That's right the USA. Things may appear to be under relative control in this part of the world (though they fall roughly into the middle of the road death ratio only), but they do have some crazy laws! Many of these are no longer enforced but they're still on the books:

1: Believe it or not a driver may not be blindfolded while operating a vehicle

2: Driving the wrong way down a one-way street with a lantern attached to the front of your automobile is liable to get you fined in Alabama

3: Cars may not be driven in reverse - ever

4: Vehicles lacking a driver may not exceed 60 miles per hour

5: Women may not drive in a house coat

6: It is a misdemeanour to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale true story

7: Peacocks retain the right of way while crossing any street, including your driveway

And you think you know a place . . .

Maybe now you feel a little better about AARTO, or maybe you still don't, but either way at least it can be explained in a logical fashion by just arranging to attend AARTO seminars. Regardless of your feelings on the subject, at least you can take satisfaction in the fact that the rest of the world is still worse off.
