History

Your practice could be getting more out of Twitter. But many are leery of Twitter, or dont see the point of it. Easy Social Practice wants to explain its worth. But first, heres the background.

Jack Dorsey created Twitter in 2006 and it the social network is often called the SMS of the internet. Users post small messages of 140 characters a tweet. Twitter is one of the top ten sites on the web, has over 500 million users worldwide. Every day there are more the 343 million tweets. Hashtags (#) allow topics to be sorted, and trend, enabling people all over the world to join an instant global conversation.

What Your Practice Can do with Twitter

Many dentists have a common reaction to Twitter: Nobody needs to know what Im doing minute to minute. Easy Social Practice wants you to understand that Twitter use can bring real value to your business.

With Twitter, think small. Twitter is referred to as micro-blogging. This means you can post short updates, limited to 140 characters or fewer. Twitter is very compatible with mobile phones and text messaging. This allows the users to receive frequent, concise information from a universe of people. Gain more followers. For dental practices, that means networking with other dentists, suppliers, and health-focused Twitter presences. Twitter also can be used to reach patients. One simple strategy is in practice signage in office asking patients to follow you with the promise of Twitter-only promotions. Link your Twitter account with your Facebook, as well as on your website and blog. Digital newsletters should also have Twitter links.

The crucial point is that your patients know and understand that they can get the latest updates, news, and offers by following the practice on Twitter.

What is a good Twitter marketing strategy?

Consider who you want to reach. Whats the target demographic?

Research who your existing patients follow. Notice any trends? They often appear. This teaches you how to reach new patients like them.

Also, understand the way your targets interact. What is their specific language.

Look for specific openings in conversations. There was a story out of Charlottesville, Virginia where a dentist noticed that one of their followers, a local news anchor, mentioned that shed chipped a tooth. It was the weekend, but the practice sprung into action, opening to provide a fast fix. The news anchor (who had many followers of her own) was very happy and tweeted her gratitude. The practice gained lots of notice. Its an interesting demonstration of how increased interconnection works in everyones favor.
