Miley Cyrus recently made a big splash with a YouTube video in which she announced to the world she was quitting Twitter. A few months of data and a celebrity quitter hardly mean the wheels are about to come off, but if the trend continues this might be confirmation of the findings of a Nielsen study of Twitter followers released in the Spring of 2009.
The Nielsen Study
Nielsen found that sixty percent of Twitter users disappear after their first month of use. Looking at it from the other side of the coin, their all important retention rate is forty percent -- less than half. And prior to Oprah Winfrey's tweeting on her show the retention rate was only thirty percent. Think about that. First seven and now six out of every ten people who register on Tweeter don't return after the first month. So what? Competition in the Social Media space is getting pretty fierce, with top ranked Facebook looking to eat into Twitter's market share. So what was Facebook's retention rate in its startup phase? Twice as high, and today Facebook's retention rate is seventy percent. Twitter isn't attracting enough newbies to make up for the "quitters." According to Nielsen the continuation of a forty percent retention rate will limit Twitters reach into the overall Internet market to ten percent.
Immediately after the study was released, Nielsen was bombarded with complaints from loyalists that they did not include Tweeters who abandon the Twitter homepage and login on third party interfaces like Tweetdeck. So Nielsen ran the study again and came up with essentially identical results. So why don't Tweeters hang around?
The "Banality" of Twitter
In Miley's goodbye video she said she started "tweeting about pimples" and now she was going to "stop living for moments and start living for people." Whether you like her of not, the comment about "tweeting about pimples" cuts to the heart of one of the major criticisms of Twitter. Tweeting about ordinary, everyday stuff quickly becomes boring and dull. And if you limit your involvement to a few friends you already know and members of your own family, that could happen. But real Twitter fans say people like that don't get what Twitter is all about.
