There are a few things I've learned over the years that will push you towards success and away from failure.

1. How to aim towards success

So you want to lose belly fat. Ok. Give yourself a certain amount of time and a specific amount of weight. "Lose belly fat" is a very vague goal and is tough to measure. Lose belly fat to what degree? There are super-thin people who claim to have bellies. Get some clear goals


Take a picture to measure just how the shape of your belly changes. Sure, maybe you lost five pounds but why do you feel like you still haven't gotten rid of that belly? Is it because you haven't done enough crunches? Is it because you haven't lost enough weight yet? Is it because you just haven't noticed the difference because the change in your belly size is gradual?

Keep a journal about your food and exercise program. If you are unhappy with the results you can look back and see how to improve next time.

2. How to steer clear of failure

Don't compare yourself to others. It's discouraging to see how seemingly easy other people have and how they have naturally fat bellies as they chow down on a big mac. Why are you stuck with a green salad and a pot-belly. These types of thoughts will drive you crazy. This is between you and your belly

Allow for change. Sometimes you might fail on the first try. Two weeks and no results? Look back at your food diary, make some changes, and try again. The only way to fail is to quit.

Get some exercise in. This will not only make you feel better about yourself, it can build muscles which will help in burning fat and defining your stomach area muscles. Losing belly fat can also be about building muscle.
