Two Main Types Of Tooth Stain
Even stains that cause discoloration on tooth surfaces have categories of their own
. Extrinsic stains refer to sediments that come from outside the mouth. These stains are usually caused by external or environmental factors. Sometimes, even people who are meticulous with dental healthcare unconsciously cause stains to accumulate on their teeth. These inappropriate practices are often unavoidable, such as eating.
Some people are not aware that there are particular foods and beverages that can cause discoloration on a persons teeth. Some foods contain substances or pigments that stick to the teeths surfaces; hence, tooth discoloration occurs. Tea, coffee, red wine, soda, berries, and curries are some of the foods that can cause staining.
Tooth discoloration or stains can also be caused by poor dental hygiene. When one doesnt observe correct dental hygiene, plaque and bacteria gather on the exterior layer of the teeth. Hardened plaque, or tartar, turns the actual color of ones teeth from white to yellow or brown. In Los Angeles, California, dentists perform several different techniques in restoring the clean, white appearance of a patients teeth. One approach in bringing a patients tooth color back is by professional or in-office bleaching.
In-office bleaching is done by applying a special gel on the teeth, which would left on the teeth for a couple of minutes. An
LA dentist can use bleaching agents with higher concentrations than the bleaching gels in whitening kits available in boutiques and drugstores. Only trained experts can apply these whitening compounds, because a mistake in application or dosage can cause serious dental problems.
After a few minutes, an
LA dentist would cure the gel with a highly focused light. Patients would be instructed to rinse off the gel to see if another application should be done. The process is repeated until the desired tooth color is achieved.
While in-office treatments are usually done inside a dental clinic, take-home teeth whitening kits can be used without any supervision of an
LA dentist, as long as instructions are carefully followed. These over-the-counter bleaching agents, however, have gels of lower concentration, so overuse of the gels will not result in serious problems.
