Two hundred panic-filled meters in twenty seconds!
Two hundred panic-filled meters in twenty seconds!
You've all seen the movies in which, panic-stricken, our hero performs a super-human feat, knocking the two assailants unconscious, running half a mile to the riverside, diving in, catching hold of the suicidal, distraught heroin and dragging her to the bank to miraculously save her life. And, fittingly, the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation turns in to a more meaningful and oh-so-deserved moment of realisation, deeper understanding and just pure passion.
This was all brought about by a panic attack a positive panic attack if you can imagine such a thing! Much like my two hundred meter sprint to catch the bus, driven by the certain knowledge that missing it and being late for the interview would have put me back several important steps in my ascent to managerial status. Not to mention the ignominy.
Positive panic attacks do happen. They can cause the adrenalin to flow and empower one with, indeed, super-human abilities. But this obscures the fact that the other 99% of panic and anxiety attacks are debilitating, crippling and sap all ability completely.
John Cleese as Basil Fawlty is a prime exponent of the panic-driven feat. Unfortunately, the outcome of his escapades, usually an attempt to mask some previous misdemeanour (which has suddenly revealed itself as such, hence the panic) which is doomed to failure, adrenalin-driven though it is.
Once struck by the realisation that some terrible thing is absolutely bound to happen whether or not anybody else would agree with this analysis the result (the panic attack) is usually completely numbing. Total loss of ability to think straight, breath properly or even move is generally the result. Not the Incredible-Hulk-like capacity that makes the two hundred meter dash of the overweight thirty-something suddenly possible.
Negative, thus, not positive. But maybe some adrenalin-like substance can be produced. Having realised what is going on, we have to manufacture this chemical internally to overcome the debilitation and restore ourselves to normality.
Let's work on it!
