Srinagar: Two civilian got injured in clashes with police in south Kashmir's Anantnag town, after the locals demanding release of youths arrested on charges of stone-throwing.

Eye witness told Agence India Press that police lobbed teargas shells and swung batons to disperse the peaceful protestors adding that two persons were injured in the violence.

Anantnag town had witnessed violent protests on November 17 after Eid-ul-Azha prayers during which a police vehicle was set afire.

Meanwhile An eight-year-old girl, critically injured in a grenade blast in south Kashmir Sunday, died in hospital here Monday, police said.

Arifa, who had received multiple splinter injuries in the powerful blast at Bijbehara in Anantnag district, succumbed to her injuries in the Soura medical institute, a police spokesman said.

The condition of one more injured person is said to be critical.

Eleven people were injured when the grenade, tossed by un-identified men at a passing army convoy, missed its target and exploded underneath a car injuring the four civilian and seven bystanders. The injured were shifted to various hospitals for treatment. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

Elsewhere in Kashmir Valley, the situation was peaceful with no reports of any untoward incident, official sources said.

Shops and businesses were closed and vehicles were off the roads as normal life was disrupted in Anantnag town, 55km from here, which observed a shutdown.

Demanding release of some 12 youths arrested on charges of stone-pelting, the locals staged protests, indulged in stone-pelting and clashed with security forces.

Kashmir valley has been on boil since June 11 after teenager Tufail Ahmad Matoo was fired a teargas in head by a policeman in the Gojwara area of old city. Ever since the valley mostly witnessed curfews and separatist strikes which left 110 people mostly teenagers' dead. (AIP)
