Types Of Electric Light Bulbs Today And How They Can Brighten Up Your Home
Because of the new vigilance most consumers are exercising when buying any new product
, many companies have provided more light bulb options. Buying new lighting fixtures for your home no longer just involves checking out the wattage, the voltage it consumes or its durability. It is also important to find out what kind of light bulb it is, its rate of illumination, its life span, maintenance and overall cost.
Different Types Of Electric Light Bulbs You Can Find Today
1. Incandescent Light Bulbs.
The incandescent light bulb is the most common type of bulb that can be seen today. It can be easily identified by its method of utilising energy from electrical source to provide energy for the tungsten filament integrated in the bulb. When the tungsten heats up, it illuminates. One of the reasons why its wattage is low is because it uses heat as its main source of energy. It may only use 100w of energy. But while this might be a low energy consuming bulb, it is also one of the most unreliable. It depreciates quicker than other more modern light bulbs that are available.
If energy from an electrical source is suddenly supplied to the bulb, there is a sudden heating up of the filament. This can lead to the common problem of one part of the filament burning out faster than the other, causing damage to the bulb. This is why when an incandescent light bulb breaks down, it still tends to emit small amount of flickering light before giving out completely.
2. Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Electric light bulbs have been reinvented by the appearance of fluorescent light bulbs. They use a completely different approach to creating light compared to incandescent. The bulb features a tube loaded with mercury and argon gas. When you turn them on, the energy from your electrical source will pass through the tube, thereby activating the argon gas and mercury content. A chemical reaction process happens to produce UV rays that will, in turn, activate the phosphorous lining of the bulb. This is responsible for creating light. Compared to incandescent light bulbs, these lights have a longer life. They have an outstanding life expectancy and can work for as long as 20,000 hours as long as they are not exposed to harsh weather conditions.
Today, fluorescent lights offer more colours. Gone are the days when your only options are the cool white or white blue colour. You can choose an appropriate colour to match the setting and design of your room. Lights can now be incorporated into home design as a mood enhancing feature. They are also efficient and you might even find 100w light bulbs in the market.
3. Halogen Light Bulbs
Halogen bulbs are modified versions of the incandescent bulbs. They also feature a tungsten filament. But to protect the filament from impending deterioration, they have been integrated in a tube that contains halogen gas. When energy travels into the bulb, the halogen gas will then create a chemical reaction process that will prevent the tungsten from sticking to the wall of the bulb.
The downside to halogen bulbs is that they tend to get hotter faster. However, Halogen bulbs do offer brighter illumination. They are also more efficient compared to incandescent bulbs.
4. LED Light Bulbs
A few years ago, LED lights were too expensive to be installed in homes or offices. But today, they have become more indispensable not only because of their affordable cost but also because of their durability and efficiency. LED or Light Emitting Diodes are unlike the previous bulbs. There will not be a filament in this bulb. That said, they do not use as much energy as filament integrated bulbs. You can even find 100w light bulbs in LED technology. The downside today is that they cannot rival incandescent and fluorescent electrical light bulbs in terms of lighting output.
Finding
100w light bulbs or low watt light bulbs is easy. Aside from the
electric light bulbs and
halogen bulbs mentioned above, you can also find compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs, High Intensity Discharge Lamps and low pressure sodium lamps. They are not as popular as the four bulbs mentioned above but they still offer valuable lighting solutions that should be considered when purchasing a new lighting system for your home or office.
