Types Of Life Jackets

If you have a boat of any kind, then you need to know the various life jackets laws

. Most veseels will need to have at least One USCG approved life jacket per person. If your vessel is longer than 16 feet, you will need to have a Type IV life jacket onboard. Due to their limited space, canoes and Kayaks are exempt from the above requirement. Children under the age of 12 will always need to wear a UCSG approved life jacket.

If approved by the USCG, you can replace your current life jackets with type V jackets. There are a few different criterial for approval, for example the vest must be marked with a USCG approval number. The life jacket will also need to be in good condition. That said, let's review the various life jacket types.

Type 1: This is your most basic flocation device. As a life vest these are excellent as they can turn the unconcious face up. They are bulky, but they last for a long time.

Type 2: You will need to be prepared for fast rescue with this vest. One large issue with this sort of jacket however is that it cannot typically turn an individual face up. That said, these jackets must be used by individuals who are either near shore or in good shape.

Type 3: In calm waters, this flotation aid works perfectly. With their full sleeves, they will not be able to turn the person over. Rough waters would be a bad venue for this type of life vest. Such vests are typically great for water sports. Additionally, jet skis are a perfect example.

This is not the standard life vest. As a matter of fact it is simply a flotation device which can be tossed or thrown. There are only a few situations that call for these devices. If you have an individual falling off of your craft, you can use this device to guide someone in. These are often kept beside lakes and on boats to ensure maximum safety.

Type 5: This design is used for activities like windsurfing, kayaking, and others. These must be worn at all times of course, and you need to watch their label.

It should be noted that some life vests are actually inflatable, meaning they will need replacement parts after being used. Though you don't want to use the vest, you can at least effect repairs when you do use them. Such parts can be obtained from a sporting goods store or online.

Life jackets and life jackets inflatable are available in many different styles. Having the right safety equipment is necessary any time you want to operate a watercraft.
