Mange is a dreadful disease that will infect your dog. Mange is highly contagious and is something that can be passed on to other animals or humans.

Mange can cause wounds, hair loss, blisters, and multiple scabs on your poor pet's skin. Mange is caused by parasites that live on your dog. This skin disease can make your poor pooch very unattractive and sickly.

A lot of people think that mange is mange, but actually there are three different types of mange. These three types are called, Cheyletiella, Demodectic, and Sarcoptic mange. Even the names sound bad.

Cheyletiella Mange

Cheyletiella mange is highly visible. It is also referred to as walking dandruff. The parasites which live on the skin, multiply rapidly, causing damage along the way. The mites who burrow into your pets skin, will reproduce rapidly, so that only one mite is needed to cause your dog to have Cheyletiella mange, but this usually only happens if your dog's immune system is very weak.

Demodectic Mange

Of all the types of mange that there is Demodectic mange is the mildest. If your pet has this type of mange it is possibly that he can recover without any intervention on your part. The only problem with this is it is very hard to tell Demodectic mange from Sarcoptic mange which is much more severe.

Sarcoptic Mange

Sarcoptic Mange is most likely the most severe of the three types of mange. This will start out in just a few spots on your dog such as his mouth or ears. If left untreated, Sarcoptic mange can become generalized and spread throughout the whole body and effect the entire skin surface.

If you suspect your dog has mange, don't try to rid your pet of it yourself. It is always best to consult your veterinarian, as each different type of mange has a different treatment.

The best treatment of all is to try to prevent your pet from getting any type of mange, or any disease for that matter, in the first place. The best way to do this is to pay close attention to your pet's hygiene, such as regular baths and brushing everyday to remove any mites, and make sure his food has the right nutrients to keep his immune system strong.
