Typhoon Slew, Needs a Slew of Good Starts for Derby Contention

Typhoon Slew was looked upon as a long-shot contender in the 2010 race season. His two year maiden debut in the Maiden Special Weight at Churchill Downs found Slew placing an insignificant eighth place. Next start out of the gate was his first and last first of the season at the Maiden Special Weight at Ellis Park in July. September and October made no impression with a third and fourth place consecutively. Trainer Mike Maker was set to showcase Typhoon Slew at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, but was pulled from the event. Maker said that, though Slew trained well earlier that day, he showed signs of injury a few hours later. No comment was made as to the type of injury that kept him from the race, only that one foot was showing signs of lameness. This ended out the season for Typhoon Slew leaving many wondering if it was because of injury that he has remained off the circuit to date. It also leaves us wondering if the injury was severe enough to keep him from the 2011 racing scene.

In his first debut for 2010, Typhoon Slew finished in eighth at the Aqueduct MSW. Following this, he finished third to Soldat in September and a cool fourth in the Breeders' Futurity in October. It is not surprising, given that Slew has had no starts in 2011, that he is 296th in graded ranking. Three meagre starts do not help one see the possibility of Derby contention or that he even has the makings to become one of the classic champions. Trainer Maker has not made any indication of the colt's progression into the three-year old race scene, nor has he indicated what venue they will choose to debut this colt. Training continues at this time until we see his maiden debut sometime over the next few months.

With a good start to the season, perhaps Slew can boost his purse and generate a bit of positive buzz. The question is whether or not the long layoff has given this colt the advantage and training that he needs to do so? It is also hard to say how he has progressed over the last few months and whether maturity will have an effect on his racing this year as it should.

Regardless, we will look forward to seeing Typhoon Slew on the circuit this year to see if he can pull up his standing and maybe even surprise us in placing in a few of the prep courses leading up to May. Perhaps we will see him at The Rebel or the Gotham in March. If we can see a solid start from this colt, and strong finishings for the next few starts, perhaps he will even surprise us and become one of theclassic champions we expect to see win the 2011 Kentucky Derby. Long shots have done so before and will do so for years to come, maybe this is the year for Slew to make his mark.
