U. S. Ranks 49th in Life Expectancy
Reuters reported on October 7, 2010 that the U. S. now ranks 49th in life expectancy, having fallen from 5th place for females in 1950. At the same time the U. S. spends $7290 per person per year on health care, about twice as much as other developed countries.
The ultra-leftist MSNBC and Salon.com, commenting on this, are quick to pound the drum for the need for government-run universal health care as the remedy (Leftists are amazing: no matter what the problem, more government programs are always the answer). Their premise is essential that more conventional medicine equals a longer lifespan. The reality is just the opposite the less conventional medical intervention one has (other than for obvious emergency situations) the lower the lifespan. They ignore the reality of iatrogenic (doctor-caused) disease, which according to the Journal of the American Medical Association is the third leading cause of death in America, after cardiovascular disease and cancer. (For more details on iatrogenic disease, see my Better Health Update "Doctor Caused Disease" at the following link: http://www.pacifichealthcenter.com/blog/47-doctor-caused-disease/
A few inconvenient facts pointed out by Dr. Joseph Mercola in regard to this study:
2 million Americans get hospital-acquired infections annually 100,000 of them die
1 million "preventable medical mistakes" among Medicare patients between 2006 and 2008
Properly prescribed prescription drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.
The real answer to the poor health and lifespan of U. S. citizens is not government universal health care, but doing what we do every day at Pacific Health Center:
Correct nutrient deficiencies
Correct food sensitivities
Detoxify the body
Eat whole foods
Drink pure water
Take appropriate nutritional supplements
Get good exercise
Get good sleep
Resolve emotional and spiritual issues
