U.s. Open Tennis Tickets - Serena Williams Is Iffy For 2010 U.s. Open

It's hers for the taking, but Serena Williams might not be able to snag her fourth U.S

. Open title this year, after all. Williams, the current world No. 1 on the WTA, is a consistent front-runner in Grand Slam tournaments, but an injury has forced her to reevaluate her standing going into the month of August.

Williams is after her third Grand Slam championship in 2010 after winning both Wimbledon and the Australian Open this year, but her hot streak came to a screeching halt in mid-July when she cut her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant. The foot injury quickly became more serious than first suggested and Williams underwent surgery in late July, pulling out of subsequent tournaments in Istanbul (July 26-Aug. 1), Ohio (Aug. 9-15) and Montreal (Aug. 16-22) for recuperation.

While she's still healing from the foot injury that has had her out of commission for most of July and August, Williams is still hopeful she will fully recover in time for the U.S. Open in late August. Williams leads the entry list going in, and her agent Jill Smoller expressed hope for her condition, telling The Associated Press, "Right now, we're taking it a day at a time. She's resting and recovering. She's a fast healer."

Serena Williams is a name that sells U.S. Open tennis tickets each and every year, and the tennis powerhouse has been a top contender at the Open since 1999, when she won her first title in Queens against Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Williams again reached the finals in 2001, where she lost in the final round to her sister Venus Williams 6-2, 6-4. The next year, however, a sister-sister rematch proved to be in her favor, with Serena Williams pounding out a 6-4, 6-3 win over Venus. Serena's latest U.S. Open victory was in 2008, when she beat Jelena Jankovic in the finals 6-4, 7-5, and this year she'll avenge a 2009 semifinals loss to Kim Clijsters.

The action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. will heat up during the last weekend in August as fellow women netters come together for the last Grand Slam of the season, and the Top 10 in the entry list so far still has Serena Williams standing tall at No. 1. The rest of the list is comprised of No. 2 Jelena Jankovic, No. 3 Venus Williams, No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 5 Samantha Stosur, No. 6 Elena Dementieva, No. 7 Kim Clijsters, No. 8 Francesca Schiavone, No. 9 Vera Zvonareva and No. 10 Li Na.

Kim Clijsters is looking for her second consecutive Open title as she continues marking her comeback to the WTA in style, and she might just get it if Serena Williams isn't an obstacle in the way of another Grand Slam title. For now, things are looking good for Serena Williams to overcome injury and battle her way through another U.S. Open, and the action all kicks off Aug. 30 in New York.
