UK's Travel Networks Frozen Until Boxing Day

Any plans of a big thaw have been hampered today as forecasters report that a big thaw won't start until at least Boxing Day or beyond, leaving thousands of travel passengers delayed, stranded or worst still, having their travel plans cancelled altogether.

So delayed were flights at Heathrow Airport that the government stepped in, and Phillip Hammond, Transport Secretary, relaxed night flight rules and regulations in a bid to get passengers in and out of the country. This means that flights into London will be allowed to fly 24 hours a day, and across the country until 1am in the morning up until Christmas Day. Whilst this will no doubt go a way to making a difference, most airports are running a much reduced capacity to normal.

One of the biggest problems being faced by airlines is that due to the bad weather across Europe, many aircraft and crew are not where they should be. Meaning that weather conditions and flight rules need to improve so that aircraft can actually get to the right place first before passengers can even start to be moved. And it's not just the aircraft. It's the crew that need to be considered too the number of crew servicing an aircraft, the working hours they have so far worked and if additional crew need to be flown out in order to fly the aircraft back.

The UK's airports have been ground to a halt over the last few weeks. Many travellers were hoping that we wouldn't get any more snow this week, the week before Christmas, however heavy snow fell across most of the country over the weekend and on Monday.

And it's not just the airports that are suffering either. Much of the country's rail networks have either been cancelled or running on a limited service. Even the Eurotunnel has been affected; passengers at St Pancras on Monday night experienced delays of 8 hours in freezing temperatures at the London station.

In the South East's coast line the thaw seems to be setting in as rain has melted away much of the snow. However, if the temperatures plummet again, travellers will be left with treacherous travelling conditions of icy roads and much black ice.

Forecasters are also predicting that snow will fall on Thursday 23rd December across most of the country.

So if you are flying out of the country this Christmas period the advice is to check with your airport and airline before you leave for the airport. Be warned that most telephone lines will be extremely busy, perhaps try online in the first instance! Also be warned of big queues at the airport, for everything! Check-in, refreshments etc. If you can, stock up and take refreshments with you. Not only will everyone, especially those who have been at the airport for some time, want food but most shops have received limited deliveries too!
