UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES OF AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PLAN

Affirmative action plans have become very popular worldwide

, though the concept originated from the United States. Based on this, the 14th amendment of the United States constitution guarantees due process and equal protection to all citizens under the laws of the state regardless of age, sex, color, religion, race, national origin, pregnancy, childbirth, medical conditions and other disabilities. It also covers all terms and conditions of employment that takes place within organizations' on the basis of employment in relation to pay differentials, public accommodation, transportation benefits etc. On the whole, it is an effort developed to eliminate and prevent all forms of discrimination in the work place and larger society.

Affirmative action has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court as a permissible method to reach the goal of fair employment. Under this law, it is required that all organizations, employment agencies, colleges and universities submit for approval a written affirmative action plan to the required state's commission as a documentation of its criteria for employment or admission.

Affirmative action plans also mean taking positive steps to improve the overall status of the less advantaged in society, usually through the provision of educational or economic benefits. In the United States, the weight of the affirmative action program varies in relation to race as a factor in most decision making situations. For instance, it has been specifically mandated that a certain percentage of beneficiaries for jobs and admissions be reserved for members of a designated racial group, in response to some form of agitation of perceived injustice to that group in the past.

Despite the noble ideals underlying this concept, there are still a number of people who criticize it. The overall effect of the affirmative action plan policy has attracted a lot of speculation regarding its benefits versus the negative impact of the policy. However, numerous studies have indicated that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages because affirmative action involves working to assist society's less advantaged members and reduce the effects of past discrimination and injustices.
