The much successful three day road show of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi came to an end on Tuesday. The road show not only bolstered the chances of Congress Party but also sent a positive signal in the party cadres.
Wherever Mr Gandhi went people came out in large numbers to welcome him and to interact with him. So much so that it became quite tough for Mr Gandhi's cavalcade to move. One of the most significant aspects of the road show was the presence of members of the minority communities in large numbers.
"Rahulji's roadshow and campaigning will not only revive the prospects of Congress party in the state but it has also given a new strength to the members of the party," said a Congress leader.
Dr Jalis Ahmed, a resident of Nawabganj said that the members of the minority committee were quite hopeful after the report of Sachchar Committee came out. "Through Sachchar Committee Report Congress has proved its ideology. Congress and its leaders are the real well wishers of the minorities, Muslims are definitely going to benefit from the report," said Dr. Ahmed.
"You can see the crowd and analyse for yourself the kind of support Rahul is getting here. The workers of the Congress Party are also upbeat. The Muslim Community is looking a new hope in Rahul," said Maisar Jahan, who came all the way from her village in the interiors to get a glimpse of Mr Gandhi.
"We are really hopeful and are going to support Congress and Rahul Gandhi," Jahan added.
Just before ending his day three of the road show, Mr Gandhi interacted with the media at Thakurdwara. "Young people will have to come into politics for the good of the society and the system. We new a modern and young way of thinking, not only for the development of Uttar Pradesh but also the whole country," said he replying to a question.
Reiterating his stand on the statement that if any of his family members would have been at the helms of affair, the Babri Masjid would not have been demolished, he said "I once again say that if any of my family members would have been there, it will not have happened. I am repeating what my father said". It is worth mentioning here that Mr Gandhi said yesterday that he heard his father tell his mother that a conspiracy was being hatched to demolish the Babri Masjid and it should not happen at any cost.
Replying to a question on alliances, he said, "I am not against any kind of alliance. Any alliance should be done for the benefit of the party and the 1996 alliance with the BSP was a sell out alliance".
Speaking on cricket, he said, "I am unable to follow it, but hope that they will perform well".
"UP elections are no semi-final or final or league match, the question is the development of Uttar Pradesh," he added.
On his way from Bareli to Thakurdwara, Rahul Gandhi preferred to take the bumpy roads of Uttar Pradesh to reach out to as many people as he can. And the people responded to it quite positively. Throughout the nearly 70-kilometres ride, anxious and ecstatic people on both sides of the road were waiting to welcome him. So much so that he has to stop at every few kilometers to interact with them.
He stopped at the Sarvoday Inter College Maidan at Dilra in Thakurdwara to interact with the people. Thakurdwara falls in the Rampur Parliamentary Constituency, which was once represented by Begum Noor Bano. The crowd mainly consisted of minorities and young people.
Mr Gandhi started his third day of the road show from Baheri, 50-kilometres from Bareli. He received a rousing welcome in Baheri from the people who were waiting for his arrival anxiously. Twenty-eight years ago Smt Indira Gandhi also came to Baheri for a road show. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had also visited Baheri for a road show in 1983.
From Baheri, Mr Gandhi reached Nawabganj. All roads in Nawabganj, which is a Muslim dominated area, were jam-packed and it became quite tough for Mr Gandhi's cavalcade to move.
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi visited Darul Uloom in Deoband. Deoband was started in 1866 and is said to be the center of the Islamic sciences in Asia.
Maulanas and scholars at Darul Uloom were quite impressed with the young MP. "Congress is the only political party which follows the secular path and which can take the country at the heights of development. We are really impressed by Rahul Gandhi and his inquisitiveness. He has the blessings of the likes of Indira Gandhi. He is quite unlike other politicians. Congress Party has always done good for the society," commented Maulana Anjar Shah Kasmiri of Deoband.
"For the first time we saw a leader who didn't came here only for votes and politics. Rahul looked so genuine, he was more interested in the system of education, the problems and the welfare of the scholars and the students. He is one of the few leaders who met the students personally and not only the religious scholars. You can rarely see such a huge crowd in the area, there is no space even for Mr Gandhi to go," said a visibly happy Maulana Muqim, a scholar at Darul Uloom.
"Apart from meeting several students and visiting different parts of the Madarsa, he also met Maulana Margub Rehmani, Maulana Arshad Madni, Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, Maulana Ghulam Rasool Khamosh and Maulana Asjad Madni. We are really happy that he came here and stayed for so long," added Muqim.
"Although he wanted to visit each and every part of the Madarsa, he was unable to do so because of the crowds. It was unbelievable," said Muqim.
A huge crowd of scholars and students at Deoband received Mr Gandhi who has always laid stress on education. Clad in a white Kurta-Payjama and the usual Namazi Headgear, Mr Gandhi talked to the scholars at the Madarsa and discussed various issues.
He interacted with the scholars as well as the students at Darul Uloom. He inspected the world famous Madarsa and tried to know the intricacies of the educational system.
Mr Gandhi also addressed a mammoth gathering at Deoband. He said, "I am blind, yes I can't seeI can't differentiate between two Indians. I can't differentiate who is a Muslim, who is a Brahmin and who is a Thakur. I am blind. I believe that we all are one, we all are Indians".
"And yes I want to say one last thing, don't forget that I am the grandson of Indira Gandhi. If one Indian thrashes another then I will be there to stop it", he indirectly warned the divisive forces.
Addressing the crowd at Deoband, comprising mainly of Muslim Scholars and students, he said, "You need to work in a modern way, think in a new way and then only we can change the situation. Its in your hands, you will have to take the responsibility to change Uttar Pradesh and I will always be there by your side to accomplish the task".
