Residents of the City by the Bay have several options when it comes to renewing their passports. The first step is to determine whether or not you are eligible to renew by mail. You should be able to do so as long as all of the following statements apply to you:

Your passport is still in your possession, and hasn't been lost or stolen.

Your passport is undamaged, normal wear and tear excepted.

You were 16 or older when your current passport was issued.

Your current passport is less than 15 years old.

You have legal documents, like a marriage certificate or court order, to support any name change requests since your last passport was issued.

If these statements are true, all you have to do is fill out a passport renewal application, Form DS-82, and send it in along with your current passport, 1 new passport photo, a check for the renewal fees, and documentation to support a name change, if applicable.

If you don't meet these qualifications, you'll have to apply in person at a passport acceptance agency. San Francisco has 27 of these offices in post offices and other locations throughout the city. You can find the location that's most convenient to you by using the Department of State's website. If you're applying in person, in addition to the above documents, you'll need proof of identity (a driver's license or other state-issued photo ID) and proof of citizenship ( your birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or an expired passport).

Both of these methods will get your passport delivered to you in about 6 weeks or more, depending on the State Department's current workload. If you need your passport faster, you can apply for an expedited US passport renewal by paying an additional $60 plus overnight delivery charges. This will get your passport delivered in about 3 weeks.

For even faster service, if you have a confirmed travel itinerary showing that you need to leave the country in the next 14 days, you can make an appointment at the San Francisco Regional Passport Agency. The agency is located at 95 Hawthorne Street, on the 5th floor. It is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm, by appointment only. To make an appointment, call 1-877-487-2778. This will get your US passport renewal processed within 24 hours.
