USB Not Working After Windows 7 Upgrade
Is your USB not working after you upgraded to Windows 7? If so, then you are not alone. Unfortunately, this has happened to many people when they upgraded their computer, especially if they upgraded their motherboard as well. Since most people upgrade the operating system only, we will take that standpoint in this article.
The USB Problem with Windows 7
Typically, those who are having problems with the USB not working after installing Windows 7 are:
Those who have a desktop computer and not a laptop
Generally, the issue is found when the desktop has both front entry USB ports and back entry USB ports.
In most cases, either the front or the back will work but not both. (Normally the back will work.)
A Quick USB Test
If you have a USB thumb drive with a light, plug the USB drive into a USB port that you know is working. You will see the little light come on. Now, plug the USB drive into a port that you do not think is working. Chances are the USB drive will either flicker for a second and go out or not come on at all.
If this is the case, then you know something is wrong with the USB port and not with the device you are trying to use.
Update the USB Drivers
The solution is to update the USB drivers. Depending on how many USB ports you have, this could take awhile. Figuring out which USB port driver is not working is a time consuming and complex task. Therefore, your best chance at fixing the problem is to upgrade all the USB drivers.
In order to do this manually, you would have to go into your BIOS to find out which USB drivers your computer uses. This is not recommended. Therefore, you have two options.
You can let Windows try to auto detect your driver
Use driver update software
Windows Auto Detect Driver
You need to open Device Manager. For Windows 7, click start and type "device manager" in the box. Device Manager will be the first selection.
In device manager, the last device is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller. Click the triangle next to that and all your USB driver will appear. Right click each driver and select update driver. Then follow the wizard to automatically detect each driver.
Driver Update Software
Driver update software will update all your USB drivers for you in just a matter of minutes. Simply click Scan, Download, and then Install. The software will take care of everything else for you.
Additionally, the software will update any other drivers that happen to be out of date. If for some reason, you do not want a driver to update, then you do not have to download or install that driver. The whole process is made simple.
The best part of the software is the rollback. If for some reason you don't want the update after you have installed it, the software will roll back the driver for you.
