USMLE Step 1 Exam - FOUR Strategies For the Ultimate USMLE Step 1 Preparation
Getting ready to prepare for the Step 1 exam? Then you need to understand that by following these four steps you can assure yourself the best chances at success.
These four steps are tried and true strategies that can help you significantly increase your score, so follow them and expect success.
Strategy #1 - Get yourself a good study guide, one that will properly refresh the important concept learned throughout the basic sciences.
This is the most important first step as choosing the wrong study guide can cause you to miss out on some really high-yield and important information.
When it comes to a prep guide, the best one is going to cover more than just superficial information without being filled with fluff and filler. You want a study guide that touches on every high-yield topic and then goes into a little bit of depth about it, not just giving you the bare essentials.
Strategy #2 - Do a question bank..... once!
A question bank is essential for your exam preparation, but most students make the mistake of doing the same questions over and over, which is a futile practice as you are simply remembering the answers instead of understanding and being able to apply them. Instead of rushing through your question bank, take your time to fully understand the concepts being taught, even if you can only get through 20 questions per day. If you are thorough and completely understand just a few concepts, you can answer a thousand things.
Strategy #3 - Take good notes from the question bank
In #2 we discussed taking the time to learn from your questions, now is the time to take good notes about these concepts. Each question gives you the opportunity to learn 10, 20, even 30 facts and concepts, so jot these down in a notebook and you will be able to go back and use this as a study aid after you finish the question bank.
Strategy #4 - Mesh your question bank notes with your prep guide information
Compare your question bank material with your study guide material, and combine the two to give you a deeper, more thorough study guide so you have ample material in once place. After you do this, you will have a study guide that you can use to master the material for the Step 1 exam, and you'll always have this resource to refresh yourself as you progress through your medical career.
IMPORTANT TRICKS FOR SUCCESS:
Avoid at all cost a preparation book that is small and lacking detail, these are only going to hurt you come test day.
There are a couple top qbanks out there, do not try to save a few bucks by getting one that is less reputable.
When inserting your own notes and facts into your study guide, take the time to be accurate, thorough, and detailed as this is the time to create the material that you will ultimately be studying from.
For maximum information absorption and recall, it is essential that you review the information from your new study guide on steroids a minimum of 2-3 times.
