USMLE Step 2 CK Tips & Tricks - 4 Tricks For A Higher Score
USMLE Step 2 CK Tips & Tricks - 4 Tricks For A Higher Score
Studying for the USMLE Step 2 CK exam is much different than studying for the Step 1 exam, as there are many major differences between the two. For one, the CK exam is mostly clinical in nature, meaning the questions being asked are based mostly on your experiences in the clinical years as opposed to the information from your basic sciences. Because of this, many people find the step 2 exam to be much easier and more straightforward than the step 1 exam.
Because of the fact that the CK exam is thought to be easier, many students fail to prepare adequately and actually tarnish their good step 1 scores. On the opposite end of the spectrum, those with poor step 1 scores can actually lessen the effects by getting a great CK score.
Since the Step 2 CK exam is still very important, let's take a look at four fantastic tips & tricks that can help you adequately prepare for this exam even though you are burdened with all of the long hours in the hospital.
Tip #1 - Hospital time can teach you 80% of your exam
The step 2 exam is very high-yield clinical material, most of which you will come across if you pay close attention during your clinicals. Paying close attention and taking notes along the way will ensure that you get a grasp on most of the high-yield information that you are likely to encounter on the exam.
Tip #2 - Study for each discipline as if your grade was based on a shelf exam
Many schools will have you take a shelf exam after each rotation, and a great way to learn the necessary step 2 information is to treat these shelf exams as though your grade was based completely on the result. Not only will this strengthen your grade and your clinical experience, but it will strengthen your knowledge of the CK material and thus shorten the time it takes you to prepare.
Tip #3 - Create a booklet of high-yield facts
Everytime you hear a fact while on rounds, jot it down in your booklet. When it comes time to study for the step 2 exam, you will have your very own high-yield fact sheet that nobody else will have, which will put you ahead of the curve and ultimately help raise your score above the average.
Tip #4 - Don't under prepare
While it may seem easy to pay close attention while in clinicals and then simply write the exam, don't be fooled, as this is still a major board exam that requires dedicated study time. The time required may be less than that required of Step 1, but it should still warrant a couple weeks of dedicated time.
