UV Printers - are they really worth the money?
UV Printers - are they really worth the money
?
If you are in thedigital printing industry and own an inkjet digital print you may at some point consider getting a UV flatbed printer.
My advice to you is DON'T. At any cost.
Unless, of course, you want to see your hard-earned cash evaporate down the UV plughole.
AtEdgeSigns we have several UK printers. Despite the salesman's repeated promises about the print costs being lower on the UV printers than the solvent inkjets, we have found in reality this couldn't be further from the truth. Ink costs, on average, are 125% higher than solvents, and the general running costs are astronomical.
For example, most UV printers have 8 printheads, costing over 2000 each. So when problems start, costs rocket.
For example, over the 2010 Christmas period we closed down the business for 2 weeks, leaving the machine on (as per recommended practice). When we returned in January we found that the UV inks had completed crystalised, blocking all ink pipes, ink pumps and ruining all 8 print heads. The repair bill was 24,000.
Another problem, unlike solvent printers, UV printers need to be kept at a certain temperature and humidity before they can print. The cost of doing this should not be overlooked. In winter it means extra heating, and for the rest of the year it means running humidifiers or de-humidifiers depending on what is needed on a certain day. Whatever the weather, your overhead costs will soar.
This is not to mention that you are supposed to flush the inks out of the printer once a month (at a cost of approximately 200) and the endless amounts of consumables you end up buying to clean the machine (cleaning fluids, lint free cloths, swabs...).
So here is some free advice. Keep with your solvent printer. Never buy a UV printer. Like this you will keep your hard earned money in your own pocket, rather than in the pockets of eager salesmen and printer manufacturers.
Besides, your solvent printer can adequately printbanners, canvas, stickers andsignboards without any problem. So really, there is no need to get a UV printer anyway.
UV printers can, therefore, be summed up in three words. Expensive, expensive, expensive.
