Udaipur is known as "city of lakes" and is also one of the romantic places in Rajasthan, India. It was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1959 and it was the first capital of Mewar Kingdom. There are stories which tell that once Maharana Udai Singh met with a hermit while hunting on the foothills of Aravalli range. The hermit blessed him and asked him to build a fort at that place, which is now known as the city of Udaipur. In 1947, after the independence of India, Udaipur was integrated into Rajasthan.

The most appealing time to travel Udaipur is winter and autumn. In winters the temperature at day time is max. 28C and in night the temp is around 11.6C minimum, if there is slight breeze in the air.

Beautiful lakes, palaces, forts, historical monuments and its culture attract foreign tourists and domestic as well. Lake Pichola is one of the beautiful lakes in Udaipur. As a series of palaces were built at different times which you can view from the eastern side of the lake. "Jag Niwas" (The Lake Palace Hotel) is one of the panoramic view from the balcony of the palace and is also one of the most romantic places in the world. One can also view the Jag Mandir on one side and city on other side from the east bank of Lake Pichola. Its main entrance is through the triple-arched gate - the Tripolia, built in 1725. The way now leads to a series of courtyards, overlapping parathions, terraces, corridors and gardens.

The Lake Palace Hotel is now a 5 star hotel under "Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces" which was originally built as a royal summer palace.

Udaipur was named as the best city in world in 2009 by travel and leisure, also known as the 'Venice of East'. A number of Hollywood and Bollywood movie scenes have filmed here such as James Bondin Lake Palace and Monsoon Palace. Many Bollywood songs have also been filmed here. Udaipur is also known as the birth place of the fictional character Baghira from The Jungle Book.

Cricket is one of the most popular sports played in Udaipur; others are Archery, Badminton, Hockey and Football. Maharana Bhupal Singh Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium used for organizing matches of football, cricket and other sports. The lakes provide an opportunity for water sports.

A number of historical and beautiful places situated near Udaipur. Such as "Ranakpur" which is famous for Jain Temples and one of the oldest Sun Temple. Mount Abu a hill station, "Jaisamand Lake"- second biggest man-made lake in Asia and Kumbhalgarh Wild Life Sanctuary where you can find highly endangered species like wolf, leopards, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, smabhar, chaisingh (the four horned antelope), and hare. There are many more places nearby which you can visit during your visit to Udaipur using local transport or tourist operators.
