Phnom Penh, Cambodias thriving capital has experienced a colourful and eventful history. The city is Cambodias industrial, economic, commercial, historical and cultural hub. On weekdays the site may be secluded, but in the weekends may be occupied by visitors, particularly wedding parties. A dazzling modern temple houses a relic of the Buddha, and offers a sensational view of the surrounding area. There are also several stupas that contain the remains of various Cambodian kings. In various stages of disrepair are a collection of chapel-like shrines, venerated by the faithful. One contains a statue of Buddha adorned with four stars in somewhat military fashion, another houses a statue of a holy cow. The remains of Arthaross Temple hint at its former magnificence. A huge new golden Buddha has been placed in the temple. According to Cambodian tradition, in ancient times the wealth of the nation was amassed in a cavern beneath Arthaross Temple.
