Ukay Shopping at Bookay Ukay

My mom said I preferred playing by myself when I was younger and I believe her. I remember reading everything I could find at home - cereal boxes, manuals, magazines and books with words I couldn't understand at the time. I was reading Archie comics and Veronica didn't want to kiss a sick Archie because she would "catch his germs." I had no idea what germs were but I finished the story and put two and two together. Wow, I really learned a lot from Archie and the gang.

So I've been meaning to visit this second hand bookstore called Bookay Ukay for a while now and I finally did the other day.

When I got there, two little boys were so excited to find the book they were looking for. I didn't get to see what it was but they needed the help of a tall older boy who worked there to reach the higher shelves.

"Balik kayo dito, ikwento niyo kung tungkol saan yung libro ha?"

There was another girl who worked there and she kept scanning the new arrivals that came in boxes, turning a few pages and trying to decide which category it fell under. A bookstore manned by people who actually like books - that's how all stores should be.

I was so happy to find pieces of my childhood there. HAHA! Ang drama ba? But seriously, Sweet Valley High, R.L. Stine, Babysitter's Club!!! They even had the old school choose-your-own-adventure books! I used to spend hours reading Enid Blyton's stuff. I would totally ace this quiz on Roald Dahl. "I used to have this book!!" Richard Scarry books were one of my favorites. There was also a whole section for Filipino authors.

I had a couple more interesting finds like this book called "Karen Kepplewhite is the World's Best Kisser" -- children's book about kissing? Interesting. There were also biographies. Some books are classics. Some are not.

What makes the place even more awesome is the fact that they had JUICE.PH magazines! Go on your own treasure hunt! Bookay Ukay is located at 55 Maginhawa st. UP Village Diliman Quezon City (bookay.multiply.com)

Do you love books, too? Let me know by leaving a comment, I like making friends with other book lovers!:)
