Ul1015 16 Awg Tinned Copper Strands
The evolution of a UL1015 16 AWG wire with tinned copper strands will help you understand
exactly why each piece of the hook up wire is manufactured the way it is. Things such as voltage, temperature and environmental protection will all effect the wire so it needs the appropriate protection in all cases to be used in that particular application.
Plain old bare copper without insulation came about first when people realized it conducted electricity better than many other metals in a cost effective manner. Then, in order to make it more flexible, manufacturers used more strands of a smaller gauge to equal the same size as the solid strand of copper. One 16 AWG solid strand equals 16 strands of 30 AWG copper. Both conduct the same amount of electricity but the 16 strands lead wire will be more flexible and easier to use in electronic applications.
The next step involved soldering the bare copper strands to the connection which wasnt too effective. Adding a tin coating to the bare copper in the manufacturing process proved to help the soldering process. The hot solder will slightly melt the tin over the copper and help connect the wire to the terminal or solder joint. UL1015 16 AWG wire has multiple tinned copper strands for flexibility and better connection ability with the use of solder.
The next addition was adding insulation over the copper for protection against the environment it will be placed in. What are the temperature requirements and the possible moisture, chemicals, oils and gasses the wire could come in contact with? Does that insulation resist those things or can it at all?
Most hook up wire and lead wire such as UL1015 wire will be used indoors in appliances and electronics so moisture isnt usually a problem. Neither is gas, oil or chemicals. However, temperature can play a big role in the engineering process of the insulation if the wire is being used in an oven compared to a stereo. The oven will reach much higher temperatures so the insulation needs to withstand the heat without melting. For high temperature wire see PTFE wire and for standard electronic lead wire you can use UL1007 for 300 volts and UL1015 for 600 volts.
