'What is Ultherapy'? I'm Dr Barry Lycka, Edmonton Dermatologist - I'm here to explain

about a new skin firming procedure called Ulthera, also known as Ultherapy.

Ultherapy is a new type of non-surgical, non-invasive procedure for the face that uses ultrasound and the bodys own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin. It can give a very nice natural looking tightening of the facial skin, a facelift without using knives and needles.

The FDA- have approved the Ultherapy device, and it uses the common, safe, and time-tested energy of ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin. And it does this without disturbing the surface of the skin.

Since this is so new, I wanted to do my research thoroughly , and I recently had the pleasure of talking to one of the world's experts on this procedure, Dr. Eugene Nowak from Chula Vista, California. Dr. Nowak is a fast adaptor. He gets into cosmetic proceedures quite often before everybody else and is a master of this particular one. Since starting doing this about a year ago, he's done over 80 procedures.

Now what makes Ultherapy so unique is, it's a focused type of ultrasound that literally can see underneath the skin. The machine is used to tighten the deep areas of the skin known as the SMAS, the Superficial Muscular Aponeurosis System. The SMAS as we call it.

What this does is it literally goes down, it tightens the skin and makes the skin look better and there's literally no down time with this. It gives the effect of a non surgical facelift.

After a typical two-and-a-half hour procedure, a person looks better almost immediately and then within six months, there's new collagen secreted, the skin looks better, younger. This is one of the few means that literally can get a person "back to the races" quickly with no downtime. The main complication is a little bit of discomfort, a little bit of swelling, but again this is minimal. So for most people within a day, they're back to work, back to all the regular activities. And this is a big, big benefit of this procedure over everything else.

The thing I found with this, is this machine tightens better than other skin tightening treatment systems that have existed. And we found that this to be a huge advantage.
