Ultrasounds Diagnose Health And Detect Disorders

Ultrasound is a common medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves in order to produce images of a body's internal organs

. Also sometimes called sonography, ultrasound has been used for over 60 years and has many different applications, particularly in diagnosing diseases and other conditions, and offers the benefit of being noninvasive and relatively painless.

Ultrasounds are most commonly performed for obstetric uses. A physician will usually perform an ultrasound to view the uterus of a pregnant woman and to see the fetus contained inside. In these situations, ultrasounds provided helpful information, such as the size of the fetus, the gender of the child, and whether or not there are multiple fetuses. Ultrasounds can also detect any abnormalities or heart conditions in the fetus that might require special accommodations during delivery.

Physicians also commonly perform ultrasounds to detect other conditions or disorders. For instance, an ultrasound can safely scan the brain of a newborn in order to review the overall health of the brain. Ultrasounds can also be used to provide images of a variety of other organs, including the appendix, abdomen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, eyes, breasts, and spleen. These ultrasounds are usually used to detect disorders such as appendicitis, cirrhosis, cysts, gallstones, tumors, pancreatitis, and foreign objects. And aside from diagnosing conditions, an ultrasound can also review the efficacy of a surgical procedure on an organ.

There are also other specialized types of ultrasound that use the same basic principles to perform more advanced functions. For instance, echocardiography is a type of ultrasound that examines the function of the heart. An echocardiography can provide detailed information about the structure of the heart, including the heart wall, valves, and blood vessels that a regular ultrasound cannot do. Echocardiography is often used to detect congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, peridcarditis, blood clots, and other heart disorders.

Doppler echocardiography also uses ultrasound technology to benefit the heart by measuring the flow velocity of blood as it passes through the heart. Also primarily used for diagnostic purposes, Doppler echocardiography can help detect narrow aortic valve openings and valve failures.

And ultrasounds can even be helpful for non-diagnostic purposes. For instance, when performing a biopsy, a physician must insert a thin, long, hollow needle into an organ in order to remove tissue or fluid. An ultrasound can provide live images of the organ and help the physician guide the needle to the correct spot.

Ultrasounds require specialized equipment, and whether a physician uses new or used ultrasound equipment, the information the procedure provides can be helpful in diagnosing the health of an organ or fetus and in detecting any disorders or problems. And in many cases, ultrasounds help physicians perform their jobs more accurately and successfully.
